Weekend at Pimlico

April 07, 2001

Multiple stakes winner Disco Rico heads a field of six today in the $75,000 Fire Plug Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. In the $75,000 Primonetta Stakes tomorrow, the field of six includes five fillies and mares who have won stakes in Maryland in the past year. Both races are six furlongs.

Trained by Valora Testerman and ridden by Harry Vega, the Maryland-bred Disco Rico has finished in the money 11 times in 12 career starts, including four stakes victories. Three of his five opponents, Dr. Max, McKendree and In CC's Honor, also have won stakes races.

Competing tomorrow in the Primonetta are the Dale Capuano-trained Prized Stamp, winner of the Grade III Barbara Fritchie Handicap in February, and Doc Calls Her Kate, winner of a pair of stakes in January at Laurel Park. Three other starters won stakes races at Pimlico last year.

The Pimlico Pick 4 continues with a guaranteed minimum net pool of $25,000. The bet, with a reduced takeout, encompasses races four through seven. Also, today is the first leg of the Triple Crown Fever contest, which is free to all paid admissions every Saturday in April. Participants have the opportunity to select the winner of premier VISA Triple Crown prep races.
