High School Athletes of the Week

April 04, 2001

Joe Benson

McDonogh, lacrosse

Benson, a 6-foot-5 junior attackman, was the driving force behind an impressive week for McDonogh, helping the Eagles beat three ranked teams in five days to earn the No. 1 ranking in this week's lacrosse poll. Benson, the Metro Offensive Player of the Year in football last fall, began the week by scoring two goals and handing out four assists in a win over No. 10 Calvert Hall. He had four goals and an assist in a win over No. 2 Severn, then capped the week with four goals and four assists to help the Eagles beat No. 11 Mount Hebron.

Jessica Taylor

Mount de Sales, softball

Taylor halted then-No. 1 Archbishop Spalding's 37-game winning streak by pitching a two-hit, 1-0 shutout for the Sailors. The sophomore also drove in the winning run on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning at Randazzo Park in Severn. Taylor struck out eight, walked four and escaped several scoring threats. The Cavaliers had runners on third base in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings. Taylor also went 1-for-2 with two RBIs in a 13-1 victory over Mercy and 1-for-3 in a 1-0 triumph over the Institute of Notre Dame.
