Cygnus Wine Cellars to unveil new wines Saturday and Sunday

Cygnus Wine Cellars in Manchester will hold a spring equinox tasting of new wines Saturday and Sunday.

Featured wines will include a barrel-aged 1998 vintage cabernet sauvignon, and a sweet white dessert-style wine made from Seven Valleys Vineyard 1999 Botrytis infected barrel fermented late harvest Vidal Blanc.

The free wine tasting will be held noon to 5 p.m. both days at the winery, 3130 Long Lane, Manchester.

Hampstead will elect Town Council on May 8

Hampstead will hold an election for members of the Town Council from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 8.

The council meeting will not be held as scheduled that evening.

Anyone interested in running for the council must have lived in town at least a year and must live in the corporate limits during their term. Candidates also must be at least 25 years old and be registered voters.

Filing deadline for candidates is 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Town residents who are registered voters in the county are eligible to vote. Voter registration forms are available at Town Hall, 1034 S. Carroll St.

Voters must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old on or before election day, and must have lived within town limits at least 30 days before the election.

Hampstead will flush fire hydrants within town limits beginning about 9 p.m. April 11.

Library branch offering eclectic mix of programs

North Carroll library branch, 2255 Hanover Pike, Greenmount, will offer:

"Year-round Family Story Time," for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult), at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays and at 10 a.m. Thursdays.

"Plant a Butterfly Garden," for adults, at 7 p.m. tomorrow with Dee Krasnansky sharing tips on planning a garden to attract butterflies.

North Carroll Book Discussion Group, for ages 9 to 12, at 6:45 p.m. Monday. Registration is required. Call for the title.

"Spring Story Time: Feathered Friends," for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult), at 6:45 p.m. today.

"Spring Story Time: Hats Off," for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult), at 10 a.m. Tuesday and 6:45 p.m. April 11.

North Carroll Book Club, for adults, at 6:30 p.m. April 23 to discuss "Independence Day" by Richard Ford.

Student drama club to hold middle school workshop

North Carroll High School's Drama Club will hold a middle school-age workshop from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 21 in the high school auditorium.

Middle school pupils can learn the rudiments of performing drama, from backstage to center stage. Pupils from all middle schools are welcome.

North Carroll is off Route 482 in Hampstead.

Hampstead receives Tree City USA award

Hampstead has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. This is the ninth year the town has earned the designation.

The town also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for progress in its community forestry program for publications, new project or organization and park-open space.

The growth award was created to recognize environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City communities.

To become a Tree City USA town, a community must meet four standards: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.
