1999 Geyser Peak Block Collection Viognier, Alexander...

WINE OF THE WEEK

April 04, 2001|By Michael Dresser

1999 Geyser Peak Block Collection Viognier, Alexander Valley, Sonoma Moment Vineyard ($19). Viognier, the classic white-wine grape of the Rhone Valley, has a somewhat spotty track record in California. Where it is very successful, it is often quite expensive. This limited-release version from Geyser Peak is about as good as it gets for under $20. It displays the characteristic flavors of a fine white Rhone - apricot, peach, melon, coconut and tropical fruit. That might sound like a pretty sweet mix, but it isn't. The wine is delightfully dry and would match up well with a variety of seafood or poultry dishes.
