Red Sox update

Manager Jimy Williams has had a challenging spring, which culminated with another run-in last week with punctuality challenged outfielder Carl Everett. That problem appears to have been smoothed over for the moment, but Williams also has to deal with the possibility of losing two-time batting champion Nomar Garciaparra to wrist surgery and the uncertain status of $160 million outfielder Manny Ramirez. Bothered by a strained hamstring, Ramirez was scheduled to rejoin the team last night after getting five at-bats in a minor-league game yesterday. He figures to be in the starting lineup today as the designated hitter. Veteran hitters Dante Bichette and Jose Offerman are not scheduled to be in the lineup today, due to a surprising lineup shuffle by Williams. Martinez is coming off a dominating spring during which he allowed just one run in exhibition competition. The Red Sox are depending heavily on No. 2 starter Nomo to improve on last year's 8-12 performance with the Tigers, and hope that No. 3 starter Castillo is as good as his 10-5 record and 3.59 ERA last year with the Toronto Blue Jays.
