State approves money for playground upgrades

The state Board of Public Works recently approved $45,000 in Program Open Space funds to improve playground facilities at two Carroll sites.

Wooden tot lots installed in the 1970s at Hashawha Environmental Center north of Westminster and Deer Park in Smallwood have been removed because of deterioration and safety concerns.

They will be replaced with metal and plastic structures that have a longer life expectancy.

Total cost for improvements at the two sites is $60,000.

Hashawha is a year-round facility serving the public schools as an outdoor educational program and residential camp groups.

Deer Park is a community park used by families for picnicking and sports.
