Senator's son sentenced for DWI, speeding

March 30, 2001|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

The son of Republican state Sen. Larry E. Haines was sentenced yesterday to one year in jail for driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding.

Matthew Keith Haines of Westminster was ordered by Carroll Circuit Judge Luke K. Burns Jr. to report Tuesday to the Carroll County Detention Center.

Haines also was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine in the incident, which occurred in September.

Haines has three prior alcohol convictions and received the maximum sentence, according to Howard County Assistant State's Attorney Lynn Marshall. Carroll prosecutors recused themselves because the elder Haines holds public office.

The younger Haines has been on probation since January 2000 for the thefts of two cars in 1998. He has received drug and alcohol counseling and served time in jail.

The senator was not at the sentencing.
