String quartet to play on Palm Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran

Classical Encounters String Quartet will provide pre-service music outside St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glen Burnie on Palm Sunday, April 8, then perform inside, accompanying singers in the 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. services.

Formed in 1987, the group includes Chris Gosper on viola, who is a member of St. Paul's; Carol Ihli, first violin; and Marlene Browne, second violin. Cathy Hess will be sitting in as a replacement on cello at the Palm Sunday performance.

Classical Encounters and the Heritage Choir will accompany a church quartet of singer-soloists, Eileen Izzard, Maureen Griepentrog, Bob Michaels and the Rev. John Warther, church pastor, during the service.

For Easter Sunday, a 6:30 a.m. sunrise service is planned on the front lawn of the church, at 308 Oak Manor Drive.

St. Joseph Catholic parish to hold a Lenten mission

St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Odenton will hold a parish Lenten mission, with the theme of "Finding Your Way," from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.

The mission will be led by the Rev. Daniel Francis, a Redemptorist priest living in New York but a familiar face at St. Joseph, which was his parish while growing up.

Francis has worked with teens at Covenant House in New York, taught in inner-city Philadelphia, and assisted in a halfway house in the Dominican Republic. In the mission programs, he will preach about scripture, the burdens of humanity and the resurrection of Christ.

Woods Memorial to hold children's health fair

Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church will hold a Children's Health and Safety Fair from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Sunday at the church, 611 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park.

The fair will feature displays about safety, mental and dental health, nutrition, sports medicine, early childhood education and spiritual nurturing for families.

It will be followed by the church's weekly Sunday Night Alive service at 5:30 and a dinner at 6:15, for which members pay but visitors are admitted free.
