Hospital seeks junior volunteers for asthma day camp

Junior volunteers are being sought for North Arundel Hospital's 13th "Camp Airways" session - a day camp for children ages 6 to 12 who have asthma - that will be held Aug. 6 to 10 at the Community Center at Woods in Severna Park.

Volunteers must be at least age 14 and able to attend the camp from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. They can earn 40 hours of community service credit and will receive a T-shirt and hat.

Responsibilities include serving as a "camp buddy" for two or three assigned campers, and assisting with arts and crafts, asthma education, and swimming and other outdoor activities. Volunteers must provide their transportation to and from camp.

Seminar on sleep disorders offered at medical center

A free seminar on sleep disorders will be presented from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Donner Pavilion on Anne Arundel Medical Center's Medical Park campus - a program described as an observance of National Sleep Awareness Week.

Dr. Ira Weinstein, a medical staff member who is board certified in sleep medicine, will discuss the benefits of adequate sleep and consequences of sleep disturbances and disorders.

In the second part of the program, clinical social worker Kimble Leigh-West will talk about the impact of children's sleep habits on behavior and school performance.

The talk is co-sponsored by the hospital and National Sleep Technologies.

2001 drug guide available from Arthritis Foundation

The Arthritis Foundation is offering a free "2001 Drug Guide" to people with arthritis. The guide covers eight drug categories and gives information on more than 250 medications and treatments used for arthritis and related conditions.

It also contains a journal for people to record information related to changes and experiences when taking medications.

Joins hospital staff: Laura Jewell of Pasadena has joined the North Arundel Hospital staff as community relations coordinator for the psychiatric department. Jewell will be responsible for promoting and expanding the hospital's psychiatric services. She formerly worked at Carroll County General Hospital and Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Nurse manager: North Arundel Hospital has named Lynn Fisher of Pasadena as nurse manager of its Wound Healing Center. Fisher will be responsible for coordination of patient care and oversee all clinical documentation. She was formerly assistant director of nursing at Mariner Health in Glen Burnie, and holds an associate of arts degree in nursing from Anne Arundel Community College.
