Neighbors committee seeks better noise reduction

BWI Neighbors Committee has formed a task force to study and implement ways to accelerate the phasing out of a noise-reduction kit used by certain aircraft operating at BWI that is considered less effective than a newer, quieter plane engine model.

The committee distributed its goals at its quarterly meeting this month.

The task force plans a campaign to educate elected officials about the nature and severity of the problem; encourage sponsorship of state and federal legislation to eliminate retrofitted aircraft by 2002; support similar efforts of trade organizations to phase out the disputed kit; accelerate the development technology for a quieter engine; and seek legislation to require sellers to inform buyers of property in areas affected by ground or flight noise from the airport.
