Absorbing books for vacation time

JUST FOR PARENTS

March 25, 2001|By Athima Chansanchai

For many kids, spring break is a welcome reprieve from the pressures of school. Many kids might feel that reading is a schooltime-only chore. Why not show your kids that reading can also be a fun downtime activity? While kids are young and (relatively) free they might enjoy uninterrupted absorption in a good book, or even a series. Mix up classics and newer stories.

Some one-week (perhaps less!) wonders to consider:

"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis

"Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White

His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman -- start with "The Golden Compass"

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket -- start with "The Bad Beginning"

"Harriet the Spy" by Louise Fitzhugh
