Manager found dead at Anneslie dry cleaning shop

The manager of a dry cleaning business in Anneslie was found dead yesterday morning inside the shop.

The owner of Atlantic Cleaners, in the 700 block of Walker Ave., found the body of Mary Louise Roe behind a counter about 7:30 a.m. while preparing to open for the day, said Cpl. Vickie Warehime, spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Police Department.

The cause of death appeared to be "upper body trauma," police said.

Roe, 56, of the 1300 block of Paul Road in Severn, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The business is in a one-story brick and wood building set back from the road in a quiet residential neighborhood just north of the Baltimore City line. It is the only commercial property in the area.

Police said the victim worked until the 6 p.m. closing time Friday, but they weren't sure when the killing took place or whether any property was missing.

Thomas Harney, 74, a longtime resident who lives next to the shop, said the woman "was very nice. She was very friendly." He said he did not know anything had happened until he saw police and television cameras around 10 a.m.

"A place like that is quiet," Harney said. "It's just mind-boggling."
