Robbery, bomb scare prompt evacuation at shopping plaza

MOUNT AIRY - Several stores and a day care center in the Mount Airy Shopping Center were evacuated yesterday morning when a man who robbed a Safeway grocery store left behind a fake bomb in a lunch box, state police said.

Police said a man entered the store in the center off Route 27 about 10:30 a.m. and placed a lunch box on the customer-service counter. He opened the box to show an employee a blinking light and a note saying he would blow up the store unless he was given money. The man left the box and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. Police said they had no suspects.
