Modell, trophy keep date

David Modell, president of the world-champion Baltimore Ravens, is fulfilling a promise he made and taking the Lombardi Trophy to Carroll County.

Modell and the Super Bowl trophy will be the "guests" of honor April 17 at the dinner for the county's 18 volunteer recreation councils to be held at Wilhelm Ltd. Caterers on Route 140. Modell will be available for congratulations and the trophy for close-ups.

Council members will have first crack at the 600 tickets, which sell for $16. A sell-out is expected.

"This is a way to show our appreciation for our volunteers," said Gary Horst, county director of enterprise and recreation services.

Modell has appeared twice previously at recreation council events and promised on both occasions to return with the trophy.

"He never said `if we win the Super Bowl,' said Barbara Lages, county recreation supervisor. "It was always `when we win, I am coming up to Westminster with the trophy.' He is making good on his promise."

Any unsold tickets will be available to the public. Proceeds benefit the councils' scholarship fund.
