Girl run over at truck stop dies

A 4-year-old girl was struck and killed yesterday when a pickup truck backed over her while she was riding a bike in the parking lot of her parents' truck stop in White Marsh.

Bill Toohey, a Baltimore County police spokesman, said the girl was riding the bike about 2:30 p.m. at S&C Truck Stop, which is part of the White Marsh Truck Stop in the 11400 block of Pulaski Highway, when the accident occurred.

The girl, identified as Sharon Jort Sarkaria of the 1000 block of Plaza Circle in Joppa, was taken to Franklin Square Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead of head injuries a short time later, Toohey said. Sharon was not wearing a helmet.

Police identified the truck driver as Harold Cullison, 62, of the 3900 block of Longley Road in Abingdon.

Steve Hastings, a friend of the girl's family who operates a business at the White Marsh Truck Stop, said the girl frequently rode her bike while her mother worked.

Another family friend who was at the truck stop yesterday, Patricia Hare, said she and the victim's mother had recently talked about the dangers of letting their children play there.

"She and I were just discussing how our kids were irreplaceable," said Hare.
