Doner and Eisner share best-of-show at ADDYs

Latter wins most awards, while MGH agency is second with seven

Doner Direct and Eisner Communications Inc. shared the honor of best-of-show at the 27th Annual Best in Baltimore ADDY Awards Show, held over the weekend at the Mechanic Theatre.

Doner Direct, which won the award for the second year in a row, received the title for a television commercial done for Sylvan Learning Centers called "Young Reading." That spot featured a little girl alone in a forest clutching a book and talking in the third person about her struggles with reading.

Doner won a total of four ADDYs and six certificates of excellence. Baltimore is the headquarters for the direct marketing arm of Southfield, Mich.-based Doner.

Eisner Communications, which won more than twice the number of awards garnered by any other agency, received its best-of-show award for a television spot done for the Maryland Lottery called "Pumpkin Chumpkin." That commercial was filmed at the annual Lewes, Del., contest in which huge catapults hurl pumpkins skyward, as part of a $3 million campaign to brand the lottery as synonymous with fun.

Eisner, which reports annual billings of $222 million, won 17 ADDYs and 38 certificates of excellence.

This year's contest attracted nearly 800 entries in 63 categories - an increase of 240 entries over last year's number. About 500 people attended the event on Saturday.

Owings Mills-based MGH Advertising Inc. won seven ADDYs - the second-highest number of any agency - in its second year of participating in the contest. The firm also won nine certificates of excellence. The third-highest number of ADDYs went to Spur Design, with five. The shop also brought home seven certificates of excellence.

Local winners will go to regional and national competitions. Winners of the national ADDYs, which are being judged in Baltimore in May, will be announced the following month in Cleveland.
