State school board to answer questions at public forum

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a public forum for the Maryland State Board of Education at 7 p.m. March 14 in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

Individuals may address state board members on statewide issues such as all-day kindergarten, high school assessments, the Maryland School Performance Assessment Program, minority achievement, reading initiatives and the shortage of teachers.

Those who want to speak may register at the meeting site, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Registration will close at 7:15 p.m. Speakers will be called in the order in which they sign up. Questions or statements should be brief.

County seeks nominations for child care award

Nominations for a Howard County award for excellence in child care or early childhood programs, and recognition of businesses or individuals who have made a positive difference in the lives of children must be received by the county by March 15. Nominees will be recognized at the county's third "Celebrating Successes" ceremony at 7 p.m. April 24 in Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville.

Nomination forms are available from the Howard County Child Care Resource Center, 410-313- 1940 or 410-313-1918.

Tai Sophia sets programs for prospective students

The Tai Sophia Institute - the expanded Traditional Acupuncture Institute - will offer three evenings for prospective students. "An Evening with Simon Mills" will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in Suite 100, 10227 Wincopin Circle, Columbia. Mills, who co-founded and was director of the Centre for Complementary Health Studies at the University of Exeter, England, will direct the institute's new master's program in botanical healing.

"An Evening with John Sullivan," will feature the program director for a master of arts degree in applied healing arts. The session will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

An open house for these programs and the institute's master of acupuncture program will be held at 9:30 a.m. March 24.

Kiwanis Club offering $12,000 college scholarship

The Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City is offering a $12,000 college scholarship to a graduating senior attending a Howard County public school. The money will be spread over four years.

The deadline for submission of applications is March 15. Details are available at high school guidance departments.
