WINE OF THE WEEK

March 07, 2001|By Michael Dresser

1999 McDowell Mendocino Syrah ($12). Here's a juicy, rich syrah that's beginning to approach the charms of a good Rhone, the ancestral soil of this up-and-coming red grape variety. It offers ripe blackberry fruit with hints of blueberry, chocolate and smoked meat. Its texture makes it delightful for serving over the next year or two - preferably with beef, lamb or pasta. McDowell also makes a more expensive reserve syrah, but this wine appeared better balanced and more appealing.
