Poor-shooting Hawks exit MEAC in first round

RICHMOND, Va. - Seventh-seeded Norfolk State used a 13-2 run in the opening minutes of the game to set the tone as it eliminated UMES, 68-42, yesterday in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's tournament at Arthur Ashe Center.

Eleventh-seeded UMES, held to 27 percent shooting, was led by Brasheedah Elohim's 18 points. But she also had seven turnovers.

Norfolk State had four players in double figures.

"We didn't execute well on offense and struggled from the beginning," UMES coach Surina Dixon said. "They got up on us right away, and we never recovered."

Norfolk State will play Delaware State in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
