Sesquicentennial gala to be held March 24 at Savage Mill

On Feb. 7, some sponsors of the Howard County Sesquicentennial Celebration were surprised by liveried footman Bob Russell, director of Columbia Community Players, who arrived by horse-drawn carriage to deliver invitations to the Sesquicentennial's "Dancing Through the Decades" gala at Historic Savage Mill.

The ball, which celebrates Howard County's 150th birthday, will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight March 24. OPUS 1 will play music from the big band era; the Starvation Army will play jazz; Potomac Thunder will play Civil War music, and troubadour John DuRant will tell stories.

The dinner will reflect cuisine of the times. Guests are invited to wear period dress or black tie. Tickets are $100.

Sexual trauma center's services topic of seminar

The Coalition for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention will present a professional workshop on services provided by the Sexual Trauma, Treatment, Advocacy & Recovery Center Inc. (STTAR) from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday in the Potomac Room of the Faulkner Ridge Center, 10598 Marble Faun Court, Columbia.

The free seminar is open to professionals, members of community service organizations and individuals.

Widows-widowers group meets 3 times a month

Widows and Widowers of Howard County, a support group, meets for dinner at 6 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month, and for board games at 7:30 p.m. on the third and fourth Fridays of each month.

Post-breast-surgery help available for women

Theresa Hadley of Reflections of Symmetry and other prosthesis specialists will meet with women who have had breast surgery from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 16 at Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center in Columbia.

Bras, swimwear and sleepwear will be available. Post-mastectomy products are covered by Medicare and most insurance companies. Representatives of Lynn's Day Spa will be available to discuss products and techniques for skin care, and representatives from Rave Reviews, the Howard County General Hospital consignment shop, will talk with visitors about designing a new look.

The Claudia Mayer center, 5900 Cedar Lane, Columbia, helps cancer patients and their families find information and services to make living with cancer easier. The center includes a library and a fully equipped beauty salon.
