Patuxent Research Refuge will celebrate the 98th anniversary of the National Wildlife Refuge System at 10 a.m. Saturday at the National Wildlife Visitor Center on Powder Mill Road between Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 97, south of Laurel. The public is invited to take part in the day's activities.
A butterfly walk will begin at 10 a.m. Participants will learn about butterfly habitats and how to identify them. "Romp in the Swamp," a one-person musical presentation about the wetlands, will be performed at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. by environmental entertainer "Billy B."
Guided walking tours on the trails will begin at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. near the visitor center. An "Ask the Manager" talk with Brad Knudsen will take place at 12:15 p.m. Visitors will be able to see live birds of prey and nature displays during the day. Daytime tram tours around Lake Reddington will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Twilight tours will be from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday by reservation. Scholarship recipient: Jarrod Ramos, a 1997 graduate of Arundel High School, received the Northwest Iowa Telephone Co. Inc. Scholarship. He is a junior pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer engineering at Capitol College in Laurel.
Scholarship recipient: Priscilla Rodriguez, a 1999 graduate of Meade High School, received the Carl English Family Scholarship. She is a sophomore pursuing a degree in management of information technology, also at Capitol College.

Bird walks: Raptors will be the subject of two walks Saturday at Patuxent Research Refuge's North Tract, off Route 198 between Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 32. "Raptors of the Day Walk" for ages 16 and older will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and a "Raptors of the Night Walk," for ages 8 and older -- with children accompanied by an adult -- from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The walks are free, but reservations are required. Oyster roast: The annual Davidsonville Ruritan Bull and Oyster Roast will be Saturday at the community center on Route 424 off Route 214. Food will be served from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with music from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. by New South County Band. Democratic club The 33rd District Democratic Club will hold a dinner at 6 p.m. and a meeting at 7 p.m. March 15 at the Dough Roller Restaurant, Route 3 South, Crofton.
