American Heart Association

MARYLAND SCENE

March 04, 2001|By Sloane Brown

It may have been icy cold outside, but inside the 5th Regiment Armory, hints of spring were everywhere at the American Heart Association's Heart Ball. Large backdrops painted as forests lined the walls, while corners of the room boasted clusters of real trees. Dining tables sprouted centerpieces of forsythia branches, daffodils and iris.

Dinner began with a taste of winter, though. Each guest was greeted at his seat with a seafood appetizer sitting on a block of ice carved into a heart.

Among the 450 heart-y attendees: Chuck Knudsen, event chair; Cindy Fusco, Denise Quandt, Jim Russell and John E. Sandbower, event committee members; Neil M. Meltzer, American Heart Association, Baltimore Division board chair; Dr. Athol Morgan, board president; John A. Gilpin, Dr. Deborah Barbour, Sheldon S. Satisky and Jay Weinstein, board members; Dr. Bill Balke, American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate board member; Medaris Banks, Merck & Co. hospital sales representative; David Paulson, the Mockingbird Co. president / CEO; Donna Hamilton, WBAL-TV news anchor; Herb Belgrad, Tydings & Rosenberg partner; Renee Ades, Adelberg Rudow Dorf & Hendler associate attorney; Jamie Ryan, Legg Mason Trust vice president; Lise Perunovich, Park Group president; Dr. Gary Hack, University of Maryland Dental School assistant professor; and DeLois Jeffers, Imaging Technologies & Services Inc. president / CEO.

The gala raised $422,000 for the American Heart Association.
