Today's games

March 03, 2001|By Paul McMullen

North Carolina (1-1) at Navy (0-1)

Time: noon, Rip Miller Field.

Outlook: Both teams are coming off disappointments, as the Tar Heels collapsed in a five-goal loss to Bucknell, and the Mids dropped an overtime decision to UMBC. North Carolina leads the series, 8-6, but Navy won the last meeting in Annapolis, in 1999, by two goals.

Johns Hopkins at Princeton

Time: 1 p.m., Class of 1952 Stadium.

Radio: WJFK 1300 AM.

Outlook: Dave Pietramala's first game as the Blue Jays' coach comes against Bill Tierney, who was his first defensive coordinator when he played for Hopkins in the late 1980s. Princeton won, 15-11, at Homewood Field last year. The banged-up Blue Jays will have a new starter in the goal, either Nick Murtha or Rob Scherr.

Hofstra (0-1) at Loyola (1-0)

Time: 1 p.m., Curley Field.

Radio: WNST 1570 AM.

Outlook: The Greyhounds are after their seventh straight win over the Flying Dutchmen, who were upset by Massachusetts in their opener. Loyola is coming off an 8-7 win over Delaware, and it needs to improve its shooting percentage.

Towson (1-1) at Lehigh (1-1)

Time: 1 p.m., Murray H. Goodman Field.

Outlook: The Tigers took the first eight meetings in the series, until the Hawks scored a one-goal win at Towson last season. Lehigh beat Air Force and lost to the home team at the Denver Pioneer Face-Off Classic. The Tigers couldn't run with Virginia, but got everyone playing time in Tuesday's win over Radford.

Mount St. Mary's (0-1) at UMBC (1-0)

Time: 2 p.m., UMBC Stadium

Outlook: The Retrievers beat the Mountaineers by 10 goals last season, running their record in the series to 16-0. UMBC had a solid debut, as it won an overtime game at Navy, and Mount St. Mary's fell behind 8-2 at the half en route to a 13-7 loss to Delaware.
