Enrollment in state's prepaid college program ends Feb. 28

The current enrollment period for the Maryland Prepaid College Trust, an investment pool that allows parents to pay for future college tuition essentially at today's prices, ends Feb. 28.

A trust investment, which can be purchased in a lump sum or in an extended payment plan for four- or two-year schools, will pay the average tuition of students enrolled in state colleges or universities. This year, that figure is $4,954 for four-year schools.

Payments into the plan are deductible from state taxes, and there are no state taxes on earnings on the payout. The payout is backed by the state. Information: 1-888-463-4723 or on the Internet at www.prepaid.usmd.edu.

Koenig gift to aid students at St. Mary's

A $100,000 gift from the Koenig Foundation and Charitable Trust will aid pupils from Washington's Bruce-Monroe Elementary School who attend St. Mary's College.

After the Bruce-Monroe students learned late last year that college scholarships promised in kindergarten by a local foundation would not materialize, St. Mary's President Margaret O'Brien told the students, now seniors in high school, that any who could meet admission requirements could attend St. Mary's free.

The gift, to be paid in $25,000 installments over the next four years, will support one of the Bruce Monroe students and one or more students from Calvert County.

Goucher chairwoman honored as volunteer

The chairwoman of Goucher College's board of trustees has received national recognition for her volunteer work for the school from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Higher Education.

Marilyn S. Warshawsky of Ruxton received the 2001 Robert L. Payton Award for Volunteer Service at the CASE district meeting in Pittsburgh this month.

A 1968 graduate of Goucher, Warshawsky began her work for the school in 1972 as chairwoman of a scholarship benefit sponsored by the Goucher Club of Baltimore. She has been a member of the board of trustees since 1986, and currently chairs the school's presidential search committee.
