Memorial Stadium exhibit opens today

February 09, 2001|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

An exhibit celebrating Baltimore's Memorial Stadium - featuring historic photographs and memorabilia such as shoulder pads worn by John Unitas - opens today at the Babe Ruth Museum, 216 Emory St.

The stadium on 33rd Street, dedicated to the memory of World War II veterans, is scheduled to be demolished.

More than 100 people gathered last night at the downtown museum to summon fond remembrances of the stadium and hear stories from the glory days of the Baltimore Colts and Orioles.

The exhibit was dedicated to the late John Steadman, the noted author and sports columnist for the Baltimore News American and The Sun. Steadman was also a champion of the museum and the rags-to-riches story of Ruth.

Unitas said of the stadium, "At my first intrasquad game, 45,000 fans showed up to watch us scrimmage. Memorial Stadium was like a home away from home. It will stay dear in my heart and my mind."
