Model-train show

They're doing the locomotion this weekend at the Maryland State Fairgrounds. The Great Scale Model Train Show, the largest juried show of its kind in the country, features elaborate operating displays and layouts in a variety of scales, model-railroad accessories and scenery, building supplies, train books, videos, kits and more. There will be train movies and educational exhibits aimed at children. Demonstrations and clinics will be presented. And an exhibit on starting a model-train hobby at any age and with any budget will be showcased. The event is presented by the Ellicott City Scale Model Railroad Association.

The show runs 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, York Road, Timonium. $6; free for ages 12 and under. Maximum family charge is $12. Return Sunday free. Call 410-730-1036.

Kids' Ravens party

Who says only grown-ups like football? Ask a kid - they'll tell you all about the Ravens. Super Bowl fever is contagious. And everybody's got it.

This weekend, Port Discovery is letting kids in on the football frenzy. Its "Kid-Powered Tailgate Party" features an array of sports and learning events. "Kids Korner - Kids' Tips Video Session" allows kids to step up to the camera and give the Ravens their best advice on winning the big game or just wish them well.

"The Playboard" is a giant board on which kids can write their well wishes or strategies on winning the game. "Quarterback Toss" lets kids toss a football through a target. "Animal Magnetism With a Ravens Twist" has kids creating a raven or other creature within its habitat and bringing it to life with magnets. (This event runs now through Sunday.) All events take place Saturday and Sunday. Sunday's participants will enjoy party food and drinks and have a chance to win an autographed Ravens football, tickets to a 2001 Ravens game and more. Now through Sunday, visitors to Port Discovery who wear purple or chant a Ravens' cheer will receive one dollar off admission.

The "Tailgate Party" runs 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and noon-3 p.m. Sunday at Port Discovery, 35 Market Place. $10; $7.50 ages 3-12; free for ages under 3. Call 410-727-8120.
