Carroll schools chief recovering at his home after surgery

January 24, 2001|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

Carroll County interim Schools Superintendent Charles I. Ecker is back home and doing well after undergoing single-bypass surgery last week.

Staff members who have spoken with him describe the 72-year-old as "chipper" and said he is worried only about finding enough to do during his recovery. He returned to his Columbia home Sunday and has been flooded with cards, flowers and food baskets.

Ecker's doctors discovered a blockage in one of his coronary arteries after a routine physical this month. Ecker told his executive assistant, Dona Voitelle, that he expects to return to work in two weeks -- despite his doctors' prediction that he would need four to six weeks. "I told him we'll see about that," Voitelle said. "But he sounds great."
