1998 Murphy-Goode "Murphy Ranch" Petit Verdot, Alexander...

WINE OF THE WEEK

January 24, 2001|By Michael Dresser

1998 Murphy-Goode "Murphy Ranch" Petit Verdot, Alexander Valley ($30). Here's a splurge for the Ravens fan who wants to celebrate Festivus Maximus with some Vino Maximus. Appropriately labeled in Ravens purple, this red wine combines the beefiness of Tony Siragusa with the impact of a Ray Lewis tackle. For all its oomph, it's a wine with a lush, soft texture and considerable complexity. Made from a little-known Bordeaux blending grape, it offers intense flavors of blackberry, chocolate, coffee and herbs. Serve with red meat. New York strip steak, maybe?
