Man dies when car veers off parkway and strikes a tree

A 76-year-old Elkridge man died yesterday when his car struck a tree and went over an embankment in Columbia, Howard County police said.

The sole occupant of the car, George Norman Andrews of the 6800 block of Old Waterloo Road, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was traveling east on Little Patuxent Parkway, between Harpers Farm Road and Banneker Road, at 9:25 a.m. when the accident occurred.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that Andrews' 1997 silver Cadillac DeVille apparently veered to the left. At that point, police said, he overcorrected to the right, went off the road and struck the tree with the driver's side door.

Andrews was wearing a seat belt, police said. He had diabetes, and investigators are trying to determine whether his blood-sugar level or any other medical factor might have contributed to the accident.
