Lee/Jackson birthday

Celebrate the birthdays of two Civil War generals Saturday at the Lee/Jackson Monument downtown. Watch as Confederate and federal re-enactment troops take part in ceremonial displays with period music. The ceremony honors Confederate Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, born Jan. 21, 1824, and commander-in-chief of the Confederate Army Robert E. Lee, born Jan. 19, 1807. Refreshments will be available after the ceremony.

The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lee/Jackson Monument at Art Museum and Wyman Park drives. Free. Call 410-296-9235 or 410-747-3271 for more information.

Cat show

Have plans for the weekend? No? How about spending it with 200 cats? The Mason Dixon Cat Fanciers present their annual cat show Saturday and Sunday at Essex Community College. You'll watch cats from a range of breeds compete, including Japanese bobtails, Maine coons, Chartreux and many well-known purebreds. Spectators are not only welcome but are encouraged to get up-close with the cats as they await competition. They also are invited to ask questions of the owners. Vendors will offer cat-related items; rescued and shelter cats will be available for adoption; and kittens will be offered for sale by their owners. Proceeds from the show benefit the Save a Life Feline Foundation; donations of cat food and bedding will be gratefully accepted at the door.

The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Essex Community College, Physical Education Center Building, Rossville Boulevard. $3-$6. Call 301-498-3809.
