Farm museum offers slate of classes

Learning: Classes in more than a dozen of the traditional arts will be available at the Carroll County Farm Museum beginning next month.

The Carroll County Farm Museum will hold classes in the traditional arts next month and in March.

Available classes are:

Calligraphy: From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 3; cost is $25. This is a beginner's overview and history of letter forms and pen-making.

Scherenschnitte: From 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 3; cost is $20. Students will learn German paper cutting and make a framed piece of art.

Horn making: From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 10; cost is $45. Students will learn the history and techniques of horn making and make an engraved powder horn.

Basket making: From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 10; cost is $50. Students will make a twill weave field basket.

Rug hooking: From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 3, 4, 10, 17 and 24; cost is $50, plus a materials fee. Students will create a design and make a rug.

Spinning: From 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 3; cost is $10. Students will learn the basics of spinning. Only two wheels are available, so bring yours if you have one.

Broom making: From 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 3; cost is $20. Students will make an old-fashioned broom.

Ribbon embroidery: From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 10; cost is $30. Students will embroider a sachet bag.

Soap making: From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 10; cost is $25. Students will learn the basics of soap making and the different aromas and cosmetic effects. Students should bring safety glasses, rubber gloves and an apron.

Penny table rug: From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 10; cost is $50. Students learn to stitch a woolen penny table rug with a bird or fox for the center motif.

Stenciled floor cloth: From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 17; cost is $45. Students will design in stencil a 2-by-3-foot floor cloth. Bring your own design if you wish.

Beginner knitting: From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 17; cost is $25. Students will learn the basic stitches of knitting.

Hearth cooking: From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 17; cost is $35. Students will receive recipes and cook over an open fire in the museum's summer kitchen.

Beginning blacksmithing: From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 3, 4, or 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 6, 13, 20 and 27; cost is $125.

"Poetry on Beat" workshop: From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 6, 13, 20 and 27; cost is $50. Students will learn about beat poetry icons, culture and lore.

Basket weaving: From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 6 and 13; cost is $30. Students will create a Victorian vanity basket.

Seat weaving: From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 6 and 13.

Additional classes will be added in March and April.
