A Severna Park man has been charged with attempted murder in the beating of a 7-year-old girl from Jessup, Howard County police said yesterday.

Rusty Edson Stover, 21, is accused of beating his girlfriend's daughter, who was found unconscious by paramedics Monday and flown to the Johns Hopkins pediatric care center for suspected head injuries. The unidentified girl is in stable condition, police said.

To protect the girl's identity, her mother's name is being withheld. The mother has been interviewed by officers, and police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said she is not a suspect in the case.

Police said doctors found several bruises on the girl's body, and investigators questioned Stover later on New Year's Day. He was charged the next day with attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, and child abuse.

Stover was being held at Howard County Detention Center in Jessup in lieu of $1 million bond. Attempts to reach his family for comment were unsuccessful yesterday.

Police said Stover was alone with the girl at the time of her injury. Llewellyn said that Stover had been staying with his girlfriend for about six weeks.

Llewellyn said the department waited to announce the charges "due to the sensitive nature of a child abuse case."

Two other children live with Stover's girlfriend, and police were trying to determine whether they had been abused.
