Boy finds work pays dividends

Student achiever

January 03, 2001

The student: Blake Collins, 11

School: Harper's Choice Middle School

The achievement: The Carson Scholars Fund, co-founded by best-selling author Dr. Benjamin Carson, honored Blake this year with a scholarship for academic excellence and community service. He was one of six Howard County residents to receive the award. Blake reports that last year he earned straight A's in the second, third and fourth quarters and mostly B's the first quarter.

Why the grades went up: "They gave us more work. The more work we did, the more stuff I could get better at."

Extracurricular achievement: Blake is a gymnast and placed second in the state last year in level 5, ages 10 and 11.

Dedication to the sport: "In gymnastics, you practice four hours a day, four days a week. ... I don't get to do everything that everybody does, like, if a group of people were going to the movies one day I couldn't go. ... But sometimes I just know I'm doing it for the right reasons: working out, getting better, getting stronger, getting more advanced in gymnastics."
