Sugar Bowl

January 02, 2001

No. 2 Miami (10-1)

vs. No. 7 Florida (10-2) Site: New Orleans

When: Tonight, 8

TV: Chs. 2, 7

Line: Miami by 6

Outlook: The Hurricanes need a victory tonight and a Florida State victory against top-ranked Oklahoma to have a chance at sharing the national championship. Miami sophomore QB Ken Dorsey has been impressive. He has thrown for 25 TDs with only five interceptions. The defense is led by LB Dan Morgan. Miami coach Butch Davis, who is expected to sign a contract extension soon after the game, will coach the Hurricanes' defense against Florida. He takes over for defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, who left to become the head coach at Rutgers. The Gators have relied on a defense that forced 40 turnovers and an offense led by the freshmen passing duo of QB Rex Grossman (21 TD passes) and WR Jabar Gaffney (1,184 yards). Florida probably needs a big game from RB Earnest Graham to keep the offense balanced. Florida will be without DL Thad Bullard and OL Tommy Hillard. Bullard was declared ineligible for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Bullard left the team after suffering his third concussion.
