Baltimore police have arrested and charged an 18-year-old East Baltimore man in the shaking death of his 2-month-old son last month.

Charged late Wednesday with first-degree murder was Dale T. Ryles of the 2000 block of Kennedy Ave. Police released few details yesterday, and Dale Ryles' mother declined to comment.

Police said about midnight Nov. 21, Dezmond Ryles was sleeping in the rear bedroom of an apartment in the 1200 block of N. Caroline St.

Ryles told officers that he shook the baby to "awaken him," police said in charging documents. The baby was fed and put back to sleep, police reported.

About two hours later, Ryles told police he noticed a "white colored discharge" coming from Dezmond's nose. Someone called 911, and the baby was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he died the next morning, police said.

The state medical examiner performed an autopsy, ruling Wednesday that the death was a homicide.

The autopsy showed that the baby died because of "severe head trauma caused by shaking," police said.
