Two pedestrians were killed in separate accidents in Baltimore early yesterday after being struck by speeding drivers, one of whom was eluding an officer, city police said.
The first fatality occurred shortly after midnight when a motorist fleeing an officer struck 40-year-old Zerita Fletcher as she crossed Edmondson Avenue in West Baltimore, one block from her home on Arunah Avenue, police said.
Fletcher suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The driver, Harry Thomas Holmes Jr., 19, of the 1700 block of Belvedere Ave., was being held at Central Booking and Intake Center, where he faces charges including failure to stop at an accident with injury, and fleeing and eluding police. No bail has been set.
According to police, an officer was pursuing Holmes after he was seen driving the wrong way on Franklintown Road, two blocks from the accident. He was apprehended shortly after the accident, police said.
About 2:30 a.m., Willie Posey, 30, was struck and killed by a speeding Cadillac as he attempted to cross Park Heights Avenue in Northwest Baltimore. Police said Posey was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to witnesses, the car, driven by 20-year-old Jaeari Carrington of the 3600 block of Avondale Ave., was racing another vehicle, police said.
