November 19, 2000

The Internal Revenue Service is trying to locate Marylanders who are due refunds from their 1999 and prior year federal income tax returns.

According to Sam Serio, an IRS spokesman for Maryland, 1,329 federal refund checks totaling $905,915 were returned by the Postal Service marked "Undeliverable."

The check amounts range from $1 to $16,542, with an average unclaimed refund of $683.

"These taxpayers may have died, moved or changed their last names during the year and the IRS was not notified, or the address on their tax returns may simply have been illegible," Serio said.

When a refund is returned by the post office, IRS attempts to find the taxpayer and deliver the check.

Anyone expecting a federal refund check who has not contacted the IRS should call 800-829-1040.
