Boys soccer state finals

(All games at UMBC Stadium)

Today

Class 3A Walter Johnson (15-3) vs. No. 6 Franklin (13-1-1)

Time: 5 p.m.

Outlook: Forwards Chris Borcik (25 goals, 13 assists), Kosta Fleytman (13, 13) and Matt Schuster (5, 5) lead the Indians and eighth-year coach Larry Meekins, who are in their first state title game in only their second berth in the final four. Goalkeeper Andy Schuster anchors the defense of a team that broke through for its first region crown after being runner-up the three previous years. Borcik and Fleytman scored the goals for Franklin in its 2-0 semifinal win over LaPlata. Walter Johnson has 13 shutouts, anchored by 6-foot-4 sweeper Blake Schwartzbach and goalkeeper Eirik Ostgaard, a Norway native. Forward Andres Serafini (10, 7) leads a team that has won 11 of its past 12 games, including five straight. The Wildcats, with 13th-year coach Corky Logsdon, have won region crowns four of the past five years. Walter Johnson was runner-up in 1995, and last won a crown in '78.

Tomorrow

Class 4A Bowie (16-1-1) vs. Walt Whitman (15-0-2)

Time: 5 p.m.

Saturday

Class 2A No. 1 Mount Hebron (16-1-1) vs. Parkside (15-2-1)

Time: noon

Outlook: The Vikings haven't lost since their opening game, a 2-1 setback to Stephen Decatur, which also defeated Parkside on a penalty kick in the Bayside Conference championship game, 1-0. The state title game will offer contrasting styles. The Vikings are strong in the air and have a stingy defense led by goalkeeper Greg Peters, who has eight shutouts. The Howard County champion Vikings have allowed only 12 goals. Parkside of Wicomico County is offense-oriented and features a short-passing game that has scored 86 goals, led by forwards Shaun Bounds (22 goals, 12 assists) and Reid Klopp (17, 5). Parkside's last three wins were shutouts over Aberdeen (4-0), Stephen Decatur (3-0) and Urbana (2-0). This is Parkside's first state final. Six previous final-four appearances by Parkside all ended in the semifinals under 26-year coach Andy Hall. Mount Hebron, 34-4-1 over the past two seasons, made its first final-four appearance last season and won the 2A title. Coach Jeff Doolan's Vikings are hoping leading scorer Matt White (19, 10), who will play for Duke next season, recovers from a knee injury that forced him to miss most of the semifinal win over Catonsville.

Class 1A No. 3 Oakland Mills (12-4-2) vs. Williamsport (17-2)

Time: 5 p.m.

Outlook: Two-time defending state 1A champion Oakland Mills has won a record 10 state championships. Coach Don Shea's Scorpions defeated Williamsport in the final the past two years, 4-1 and 2-0. Goalkeeper Thomas Gleason has eight shutouts. Oakland Mills has nine straight playoff shutouts and has allowed two goals in its past 14 playoff games. The Scorpions, a counterattacking team, have outscored their playoff opponents 13-0 this season. They are led offensively by forward Kyle Farmer (12 goals, 9 assists) and midfielder Trevor Shea (11, 14). Williamsport, a skilled and stylish team, has won two state titles, the last in 1996. The Wildcats are led offensively by forwards Jason Knicley (20, 4) and Carlos Gomez (16, 5).

Class 3A No. 1 River Hill (17-0) vs. No. 4 Bel Air (16-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: These teams played each other in the season opener, with River Hill winning, 3-1. The Hawks have won two state titles in the last three seasons, including last year's Class 3A championship. River Hill, which has posted 12 shutouts, is led in scoring by forwards Shannon Jackson (14 goals, six assists) and Rashida Walcott (10, 6). Marking back Megan Buescher has 12 assists, eight of them from her long throw-ins. The Hawks, who have won 25 straight games and 35 of their last 36, are coming off a 7-6 shootout victory over Thomas Johnson in the semifinals. This is Bel Air's first trip to the championship game. The Bobcats are led by Colby Bugda (18, 16), Leann Matta (11, 8), Kim Cooper (15, 0) and Kristi Eyler (8, 5). Bel Air graduated 10 seniors from last year's team, and this season's team of six sophomores, seven juniors and six seniors has grown together and become a better team as the season progressed.
