American Cancer Society

MARYLAND SCENE

October 29, 2000|By Sloane Brown

That was no Sunday chicken supper awaiting 70 folks at Charleston Restaurant. OK, so maybe the American Cancer Society's "Autumn Gourmet Gala" did begin with chicken -- benne seed and buttermilk fried breast of chicken hors d'oeuvres -- but the gastronomic fun had barely begun.

Presided over by Charleston owners executive chef Cindy Wolf and wine director Tony Foreman, the dinner featured four courses: lobster bisque; crab, lobster and shrimp cakes; medallions of beef tenderloin with wild mushroom duxelles; and a Charleston chocolate cake with espresso creme anglaise.

But, perhaps the biggest treat of the evening was the $20,000 raised for the ACS "Tell A Friend" breast cancer program, which encourages women to get mammograms. Gathered at this gourmet get-together: Charlie Leiss, American Cancer Society mid-Atlantic division CEO; Alva Hutchison, ACS greater Baltimore regional director; Joyce Ann Burman, Nordstrom fashion consultant; David Greif, retired clothing manufacturing executive; Angela Mitchell, State Farm Insurance Co. public affairs specialist; Sheldon Michel, Whiz Car Wash Inc. general manager; Virginia Cutchin, Bank of China marketing officer; Ralph Johnson, former instructor at Culinary Institute of America; Dr. Larry Goldstein, Advanced Radiology radiologist; Dr. Scott Glasser, American Radiology radiologist; and Diane Pappas, owner of Mille Fleurs.
