Ghostly tales

October 26, 2000|By Tricia Bishop

Creaking halls, strange whisperings in the wind, unexplained knocks on the door - could it be ... ghosts? It's certainly the time of year for them. With Halloween just a few days away, our minds are preoccupied with candy, costumes and things that go bump in the night, the latter of which Maryland - especially Westminster - has in good supply.

Legend has it that the restless spirits of children haunt the Crybaby Bridge sitting just outside the town, and visitors to the old Opera House on East Main Street, now a printing company, report sightings of an actor murdered there long ago. There's even a book devoted to the county's eerie events. "Ghosts and Legends of Carroll County, Maryland" details places supposedly frequented by phantoms, and is available at all county libraries for $5.

The Westminster Branch Library is having a little fun with the local fables, highlighting them tonight and Monday with a slide show, spooky tales and an evening stroll in search of specters. For ages 10 and older. Registration required. 6:45 both nights, 50 E. Main St., 410-386-4490.

If this event is not enough for you, try these outlets to uncover more local apparitions: www.theshadowlands.net/places/maryland.htm or "Ghosts & Haunted Houses of Maryland" by Trish Gallagher, which includes 25 popular tales of area hauntings.
