Carroll Springs to honor students' character education

Carroll Springs School students and staff will hold a recognition and celebration party for Character Education Students of the Month at 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

Carroll Springs provides education, daily living activities, therapeutic skills, leisure and recreation skills and vocational skills for special needs students.

Center gets $6,000 grant to buy new computers

The Carroll County Career and Technology Center has received a $6,000 grant from the Building Congress and Exchange Foundation Inc. of Baltimore for computers for its construction program.

Principal Catherine Engel said the money would be used to purchase computers for the masonry and carpentry programs.

With the new computers, students will be able to do job searches and have access to instructional programs and curricula.

The Building Congress and Exchange Foundation Inc. is the philanthropic arm of the Building Congress and Exchange of Metropolitan Baltimore Inc., one of the region's major construction industry associations.

The award will be presented this week, Engel said.

County schools receive Md. excellence award

Carroll County Public Schools have received the Service-Learning Award of Excellence from the Maryland Student Service Alliance and Maryland State Department of Education.

The award was presented in recognition of excellence in creating meaningful service-learning in the area of public support and involvement.

The school system published a volunteer guidebook and created a partnership with Western Maryland College and Carroll Community College to generate greater community interest in service-learning.

The school system also instituted a service-learning and leadership summer camp where students learned about the needs of the community, visited a nonprofit organization and carried out a service project.

The schools system received a $1,200 cash award for more service-learning projects.
