Harford County school officials vowed yesterday to return Edgewood Middle School pupils, who have been out of school since Thursday because of a mold problem, to classes on Wednesday.
Officials, who are awaiting a report from a microbiologist who is performing mold and mildew tests at the school, tentatively plan to return the 1,200 pupils to the middle school on Willoughby Beach Road in split shifts.
A worst-case scenario would send the children to nearby Edgewood High School during the cleanup.
"It makes me a little nervous," said Randi Tur, vice president of the school's Parent Teacher Student Association, of returning pupils to the middle school. "But if school officials are willing to do what they say, I'm willing to work with them."
The affected section of Edgewood Middle has been sealed off while repair work occurs. Besides general cleaning, ceiling tiles will be replaced, water pipes reinsulated, surfaces cleaned and carpeting replaced with floor tiles. The work is expected to take two weeks, schools spokesman Donald Morrison said.
Children would attend classes in the older wing if they return to the school, he said.
