Yankees update

The defending world champion Yankees have the league's best record (49-36) since July 1 but have lost 12 of their past 15 They are still poised to clinch their third straight AL East title after once leading the division by nine games Sept. 13. The season's final series is loaded with pitching significance. Pettitte is 11-2 in his career against the Orioles, including 7-0 at Camden Yards. Tomorrow's start by the pending free agent Mussina could be his last with the Orioles. And on Sunday, Mercedes attempts to cap an improbable season with his 14th win and 10th since the All-Star break. The Yankees are in a stretch where they play on 31 consecutive days, and it shows. The Orioles would prefer to avoid a repeat of their last homestand against the Yankees, when they were outscored 27-5, including 19-1 on June 25.
