Musicians to raise the roof tomorrow to buy one for church

Poplar Springs United Methodist Church, 915 E. Watersville Road, will present an Evening of Music and Fun from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

The musical group Lone Mountain will perform. A silent auction is planned.

Admission is $5; $20 for a family of four or more. Proceeds will help pay for a new roof for the church.

Lubavitch Center to hold High Holy Day services

The Lubavitch Center, 770 Howes Lane, Columbia, will hold High Holy Day services. Services are open to the community. Membership is not required, and there is no charge for seats.

Services for the Days of Awe - Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur - will be held at 6:30 p.m. today and 9:30 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday. The shofar, or ram's horn, will be blown at noon Sunday.

Observance of Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement - will begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 8. The Kol Nidre prayer will begin at 6:30 p.m. All-day Yom Kippur services begin at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 9.

Yizkor, a prayer for those who have died, will be at noon Monday.

Herbalist to speak at healing service

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Route 97 and Union Chapel Road, Glenwood, will hold a healing service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Naturopath and herbalist Eileen Malloy will speak.

Churches to join together for World Day celebration

The United Methodist churches of Dorsey Emmanuel, Harwood, Melville Chapel and Wesley Chapel will join together for a World Day Communion Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Dorsey Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 6951 Dorsey Road.

A covered-dish dinner is planned after the service. Child care will be available.

Make a scarecrow at Ilchester fall fest

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and School, 4801 Ilchester Road, Ellicott City, will hold the 64th Ilchester Fall Festival and Turkey Dinner from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Food, games, rides, scarecrow-making, pumpkin-painting and other activities are planned.

Dinner is $9 for adults; $8 for senior citizens and $5 for children. Carryout will be available.

First Baptist to mark Men's and Women's Day

First Baptist Church of Guilford, 7504 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia, will hold its Men and Women's Day celebration Sunday.

Leah White, pastor of the Greater Faith Baptist Church in Baltimore, will deliver the sermon at the 8 a.m. service. Charles H. Smith, co-editor of the "Jubilee Legacy Bible," will be the 11 a.m. speaker.

A free gospel concert with Maude Dennis, Cecilia Little, Ron Wiggs & Gifts and the Very Anointed Choir of Baltimore will be held at 3 p.m.

Early learning center registering children

The Oseh Shalom Early Learning Center for children ages 2 to 4 is accepting registration. New extended hours are from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Space is available in the new kindergarten for 5-year-olds.

The Oseh Shalom Religious School, 7515 Olive Branch Way, Laurel, also is accepting registration. The Reconstructionist school offers programs for children from preschool through 12th grade.

Blessing of the Animals to be offered at 2 churches

St. Louis Roman Catholic Church in Clarksville will hold a Blessing of the Animals, celebrating the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, at 3:15 p.m. Sunday in front of the church.

Animals can be brought to the front of the church for the brief blessing and prayer service celebrating the creation of the world.

Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 10689 Owen Brown Road, Columbia, will hold a Blessing of the Animals service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the church's outdoor worship area.

Make butter, candles and more at Fall Daze

Alberta Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, 9405 Guilford Road, Columbia, will hold its Fall Daze Festival on Oct. 7.

A yard sale will begin at 9:30 a.m. Apple butter will be made on the premises. Pumpkin-picking, a Sadie Hawkins Day race at 1 p.m., a Dogpatch wedding, and butter-, candle- and soap-making are planned.

Franciscan Friars to hold angels seminar

Conventual Franciscan Friars of St. Joseph Cupertino Friary, 12290 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City, will hold a two-day seminar on angels from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

A Mass of Healing, in the presence of a major relic of St. Anthony of Padua, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6. After Mass, participants will be able to pray with a priest and to offer theirown prayers.

A class on the Mass will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 7.

The cost is $20.
