Homeowners group plans talk with commissioners

The Carroll County Landowners and Homeowners Association will hold a meeting with the Carroll County Board of Commissioners at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster Senior Center.

Discussion will focus on current issues affecting the county and its residents. Participants will be able to ask questions of the commissioners.

Anti-drug racing program to come to Westminster

Kmart Kids Race Against Drugs comes to Westminster on Saturday and Oct. 1 to support the Carroll County DARE program and to show children how to stay away from drugs. Children ages 7 to 12 can drive miniature battery-operated race cars around turns, over bridges and under tunnels, racing against an electronic timing system.

Participants receive a T-shirt, baseball cap and information on the dangers of drug and alcohol use. The boys and girls with the fastest times in their age groups (7-8, 9-10 and 11-12) will be entered into a national drawing for a trip to the National Championships in Orlando, Fla., in January, where drivers will compete for a $10,000 scholarship.

Kmart will donate $5 to the Carroll County DARE program for every child who participates. Hours for the event are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Westminster Kmart on Englar Road. Information: Sgt. Michael Bible, 410-848-4646.

Hour of prayer planned by anti-abortion group

Carroll County Life Chain Hour of Prayer will hold a peaceful stand of solidarity against abortion at three locations around the county Oct. 1. The event will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Route 140 and Sullivan Road in Westminster, at 2:30 p.m. at Baltimore and York streets in Taneytown, and at 2:30 p.m. at 351 Liberty Road in front of Church of the Nazarene in Eldersburg.

Organizers say the life chain will communicate a visual message that abortion is morally wrong and that local churches and individuals oppose it. Signs will be distributed to participants 15 minutes before the vigil begins.

Taxpayers association meeting planned for Oct. 2

The Carroll County Taxpayer Association will meet at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at Westminster Senior Center.

The topic will be property tax increases and how to fight them. All property owners are welcome.
