Red Sox update

If the Red Sox have any strength left, they'll play three against the Orioles. They're coming off consecutive doubleheaders against Cleveland, having dropped three of four to fall four games behind the Indians in the wild-card race. Every game is critical for the Red Sox, who continue to tweak their roster past the waiver deadline while falling into third place in the AL East before yesterday. The Orioles were outscored, 35-6, in a four-game series at Camden Yards in May, but they'll miss Pedro Martinez this time. Rapp allowed four runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings of his start. Ponson lasted eight innings but gave up five earned runs and 11 hits. He's allowed 13 earned runs in 13 innings against Boston this season. Mussina has been much sturdier, permitting four earned runs in 14 innings but is 0-1 with a no-decision. The Orioles took two of three from the Red Sox at Fenway Park in late June, with closer Derek Lowe twice blowing saves, and split a doubleheader in Baltimore two months ago.
