Police continued to investigate yesterday the fatal shooting of a West Baltimore teen-ager near PSINet Stadium early Monday.

Fredricus Culp, 16, of the 2800 block of Belmont Ave. in Rosemont was shot in the chest and head about 3 a.m. He was shot after getting out of a van in the 100 block of W. Hamburg St., less than two blocks from the downtown football stadium, said Detective Al Marcus.

Marcus said Culp was pronounced dead at the scene.

The detectives said Culp had permission to drive his father's van. He said Culp had parked the vehicle but left the keys in the ignition, and he was apparently waking toward a grassy area near a basketball court when he was shot by an unknown assailant.

Marcus said area residents called 911 to report gunshots and Southern District officers, who responded, found the youth's body.

"He seemed like a good kid and we need help in finding the person who shot him," Marcus said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Marcus or Detective Ronald Berger at 410-396-2100.
