Athletics update

A hurricane forced the Athletics to bail out of Tampa early and postpone yesterday's game, altering their rotation in the process. Ariel Prieto (1-1, 4.91) or Omar Olivares (3-8, 6.98) will pitch the second game of tomorrow's doubleheader. Rookie Jay Spurgeon (1-1, 7.00) will start one of those games for the Orioles, but the Athletics must wait to learn the identity of the other pitcher. They most likely will see Luis Rivera, though left-hander John Parrish remains a possibility. Oakland has slipped 2 1/2 games behind first-place Seattle in the American League West, and a half-game behind Cleveland for the wild card. This series carries great importance, with the Orioles continuing their role of potential spoilers. These teams met eight times in the first half, with Oakland winning five games, including a sweep in June. Pat Rapp allowed five runs in two innings of a 10-inning loss, 13-12, on June 19.
