Good sports for GBMC

MARYLAND SCENE

September 17, 2000|By Sloane Brown

As golf and tennis players gathered in the Chestnut Ridge Country Club clubhouse, you immediately knew the day's earlier forecast of rain had never materialized - the bar brimmed with sunburned faces. Crispy smiles abounded at the 12th annual GBMC Classic Golf and Tennis Tournament Dinner.

If game scores weren't the reason for some of those grins, perhaps it was the day's other tally - $110,000 raised for the GBMC Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Community Health Center and the Medical Staff Nursing Allied Health Fund.

Included in this sunny bunch of 225 players and guests: Dr. Rob Stoltz and Ray Brusca, event co-chairs; Dr. Dale Buchbinder and Dr. Tom Lansdale, honorary co-chairs; William Kroh, GBMC Foundation board chair; Steven Thomas and Buzz Matthai, foundation board members; Ben Civiletti, GBMC HealthCare board chair; Jack Somerville, HealthCare board member; Larry Merlis, GBMC HealthCare Inc. president and CEO; Charlie Fenwick, Valley Motors Inc. president; Norman Understein, USA Medical Resources Inc. president; Chris Bowen, Kaiser Permanente director of underwriting and pricing; Warner Mason, Webb Mason Inc. president and CEO; John Morton, president of Mid-Atlantic Banking Group, Bank of America; Charlene Cohen, retired reading specialist; Dr. Alf Bent, GBMC chairman of department of gynecology; Bruce Mortimer, Anderson Automotive Group president; and Nancy Giordani, facility manager of Magnetic Imaging of Baltimore at GBMC.
