Mariners update

The listing Mariners find themselves in a death match with Oakland for the AL West pennant. Their commanding lead has been whittled to two games by vanishing pitching and inconsistent offense. They saved themselves with a controversial 11-inning win over the Royals on Wednesday. The Mariners lead Cleveland by one game in a hypothetical wild-card race. Orioles fans tonight get a glimpse of what almost was. Aaron Sele, who agreed in principal to sign a four-year deal with the Orioles last winter as a free agent before flunking a team physical, brings his team-high 14 wins to Camden Yards. Former Oriole Jamie Moyer starts the second game. The Mariners are only 30-30 since the break yet have led the division outright since June 28. Manager Lou Piniella's next win will be No. 1,100. Closer Kazuhiro Sasaki is a leading candidate for AL Rookie of the Year as his 32 saves are an AL record for rookies.
